Build Smarter with Alternative Materials
Build Smarter with Alternative Materials
by Leon A. Frechette. Craftsman Book Company, Carlsbad, California, 1999. Softcover, 336 pages, $34.75.
Leon A. Frechette’s new book
Build Smarter with Alternative Materials is a well-organized collection of product reviews and material-specific advice from an experienced residential and light-commercial construction general contractor. Keep in mind that this is a book of
alternative materials, not necessarily
green materials. The products covered in the book include widely accepted green products such as cellulose and fiberglass insulation and cork and bamboo flooring, as well as not-so-green products such as virgin vinyl siding and decking and non-certified wood products. Also included are innovative products that, though not particularly green, offer other advantages such as time savings or easy installation.
The book includes construction notes and time estimates for each product, as well as manufacturer’s contact information, pictures, and an index. Chapter 13, entitled “Building to Help the Environment
,” covers green building topics such as waste reduction, lead paint management, and green building resources.
Build Smarter with Alternative Materials is a handy reference and may prove valuable as an education and sales tool with prospective clients interested in using alternative materials.
