Builder's Choice Design and Planning Awards

Social awareness and recognition of efforts to reduce car-dependence are evident in the

1997 Builder’s Choice Design and Planning Awards, sponsored by Buildermagazine and the American Institute of Architects' Housing Committee. The "Project of the

Year" is a community of mixed housing types in downtown Foster City, California, including

60 apartments for low-income seniors and 40 townhouses. The site plan includes a park and is

designed for easy pedestrian access to downtown services. The Metro Senior Housing and

CityPark was designed by Seidel/Holzman of San Francisco, with James Guthrie and Associates

of San Mateo and Landscape Architect Guzzardo and Associates of San Francisco. Regis Oltmans

II of Foster City was the builder. Other socially conscious projects recognized include

Southern Village Apartments in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and Eden Palms in San Jose,

California.
