Cooper-Hewitt Announces Design Award Winners

The Smithsonian Institution’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum has announced the winners of the sixth annual National Design Awards, including several winners committed to environmental responsibility. For more information on these and other winners, see www.ndm.si.edu.

Patagonia was given the Corporate Achievement Award for its environmental initiatives, including producing clothing from recycled soda bottles and using wind power.

Sergio Palleroni, a research fellow at the Center for Sustainable Development at the University of Texas at Austin, was recognized with a Special Jury Commendation. Palleroni runs ten-week-long design/build studios in marginalized communities around the world.

Ned Kahn received the award for Landscape Design. An environmental designer with a background in environmental science, Kahn’s work frequently focuses on the interaction between natural phenomena and the built environment.

Richard Daley was selected as this year’s Design Patron. “Daley was recognized for his efforts over the past 16 years to transform Chicago into the greenest city in America by encouraging efficient energy use, promoting the landscaping industry, and creating multipurpose public spaces like Millennium Park.”
