News Brief
Green Development CD-ROM
by the Rocky Mountain Institute, produced by CREST. Version 1.0, November 1997, Windows™ and Macintosh™ compatible. Available for $7 plus $3 shipping and handling from: Rocky Mountain Institute, 1739 Snowmass Creek Road, Snowmass, CO 81654-9199; 970/927-3851, 970/927-4178 (fax), www.rmi.org.
The companion CD toGreen Development: Integrating Ecology and Real Estate contains a wealth of resources on environmental design and construction, including much of the content of Rocky Mountain Institute’s
A Primer on Sustainable Building, various resource listings, and even the complete
Sustainable Building Technical Manual in Adobe Acrobat™ format. But the meat of this disc is in the case studies—over 100 of them, nearly all with color photos, basic technical specs, and a brief discussion of the environmental features and current project outcome.
The CD-ROM is well designed, and there are lots of ways to navigate through it. For the uninitiated, the best way might be to read through “The Emergence of Green Development”—a presentation Bill Browning gave at MIT in 1996. The presentation is laid-out in an easy-to-read, illustrated format, and more details about the case studies mentioned in the speech are just a mouse-click away.
Thanks to funding from the U.S. Department of Energy, this CD-ROM is available for an amazingly low price.
