The entire National Science Board was fired on Friday, April 24. All 22 members of the board were let go, in the middle of finalizing a report on the state of U.S. science. This board used to oversee the distribution of the National Science Foundation’s funds and lead research direction across the country. Without them in the way, it will be easier to dismantle the remaining funding and goals of the NSF and more.

These moves were being made when other nations prepared to gather for the G7 Summit meeting on the environment in Paris on Thursday, April 23. Environmental ministers from a Group of Seven (G7) nations: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States gathered to address sustainable development, energy and the environment. The influence of current U.S. policies overarched the conference goals as they deliberately took climate off the agenda. This was to avoid a known clash between the rest of the nations present and the U.S., with a focus on “unity,” although critics may say this downgrades any meaningful talk about advancing climate justice.

Nevertheless, stewards of the environment persist and prevail since a bill that would have eroded the Endangered Species Act was pulled from consideration by the House of Representatives on this past Earth Day, April 22. This bill, the “ESA Amendments Act,” would have made it easier to delist species, decrease critical habitat declarations and more. The fight for species protection and strategic plans to build with and reduce the effects of climate change continues with the help of environmental advocates.
