World Architecture magazine’s award for

Green Building of the Year for 2002. The Druk White Lotus School in Ladakh, India (see photo)—designed by Arup and Arup Associates includes the master plan for a small campus, of which parts have been completed. The project uses indigenous materials and passive solar design to create comfortable spaces in Ladahk’s high-altitude, dry climate. The second winner is York University’s Computer Science Building in Toronto, Ontario—designed jointly by Busby + Associates and Architects Alliance. This modern building is unusual in that it has operable windows and is designed to rely primarily on natural ventilation for comfort in the Spring and Fall. These winners were selected from among nearly 300 projects representing architecture firms in 45 countries.
