Corrections
In our February 1998 news story “Federal Trade Commission Sues Maker of Ozone Generator” (
Vol. 7, No. 2, p. 4) we neglected to mention that in the 1995 consent decree between Alpine Industries and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), there was no admission of wrongdoing on the part of Alpine, nor were any penalties assessed. In addition, we cited legal pressures as the reason that Alpine’s president, William Converse, moved from Minnesota to Tennessee. This information was from an unreliable source (a disgruntled former distributor) and should not have been published without verification. The article also contained two errors:
•In the current lawsuit, we inaccurately reported that the FTC is seeking punitive damages. The Commission is seeking civil penalties.
•Based on a 1995 press release from the FTC, we reported that Living Air Corporation was based in Minnesota. This is not the case.
We regret any problems our carelessness may have caused, and will check our facts more carefully in the future!
In last month’s issue (
Vol. 7, No. 4), we misprinted a couple of details:
•On page 8 we listed CA (California) as the home state of Low Energy Systems. The company is located in CO (Colorado), as the published postal zip code attests.
•Our review of
The Alternative Building Sourcebook on page 14 gave an erroneous area code for its publisher, Fox Maple Press of Maine. The correct phone number is 207/935-3720, and their fax is 207/935-4575.
