Pittsburgh Architect Wins AFH Competition

Swee Hong Ng’s soccer stadium design aspires to create a space that will bring the community together in participation and celebration. The Siyathemba football pitch is envisioned as a stage for events.

From among more than 300 entries from 14 countries, Pittsburgh architect Swee Hong Ng has won the competition to design a soccer stadium and HIV/AIDS outreach center in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (see

Vol. 13, No. 7). “The design utilizes the natural asset of earth to create terraces that emulate the gentle flow of the area’s landscape,” according to Ng, who works for the architecture firm EDGE studio. The terraces will be made of earth and adobe brick and paved with concrete for seats. The competition was organized by Siyathemba Consultants, the Africa Centre for Health and Population Studies, and Architecture for Humanity. Details are online at www.architectureforhumanity.org.
