LCA for only furniture, is it possible?

October 9, 2024

We are currently working on a LEED ID+C certification project. It involves a rental space where our customer is just the tenant, who will take over the space fully finished. He is only responsible for the furniture, which has sustainable certificates and environmental product declarations (EPDs).

My question would be: can we create an LCA including furniture only, when the building elements are not part of the scope of work and are not under the project's control?

Best regards

Framed assembly U-value calculation

Framed assembly U-value calculation

May 23, 2024

Hi

According to the review for our Project in Germany, we have to provide information to confirm that the framed assumbly U-value is based on either the LBNL Windows 6 program, or a simulation program that approximates the NFRC rating methodologies.

The frame U-values and resulting assembly U-values were calculated using the EN ISO 12631. Is this sufficiently close to the NFRC rating methodologies?

Thank you!

Sarah

Concrete Sustainability Council (CSC) responsible sourcing certification for concrete pertains to sustainable sourcing and manufacturing practices for concrete. It addresses similar attributes like Cradle to Cradle or FSC certification.

I suggest the credits be provided for CSC certification as follows:
CSC Certified: Bronze – Climate Health=0.5; Human Health=0.5; Ecosystem Health=0.5; Social Health=0.5; Circular Economy=0.0
CSC Certified: Silver – Climate Health=0.5; Human Health=1.0; Ecosystem Health=1.0; Social Health=0.5; Circular Economy=0.5
CSC Certified: Gold or Platinum – Climate Health=1.0; Human Health=1.0; Ecosystem Health=1.0; Social Health=1.0; Circular Economy=1.0

The difference to LEED v4 is that the credit 'Optimized Building Products' only takes into account NON-STRUCTURAL building products in the optimization process.

Why have structural building products been excluded from the optimization process?

Structural materials outweigh non-structural materials by far in a building mass balance, and the stewardship of building products is an important aspect beyond carbon emissions.

The best way would be to include all building materials equal.

DES - VRF mixed Proposed system

DES - VRF mixed Proposed system

February 12, 2024

Hi all,

I am working on a project where, regarding the heating part of the proposed design, the AHU's heating coil has a DES source, while VRF systems are employed for fan coil units. On the cooling side, everything is managed through chillers/VRF systems.
ASHRAE 90.1 Appendix G 2010 does not provide information for such scenarios.
My plan is to model the proposed design as per the actual design, while the baseline will be modeled entirely using DES for heating and following the standard for cooling.

Can you help me with this? Thank you very much in advance.

Alternative Compliance Paths (ACPs)

Alternative Compliance Paths (ACPs)

February 9, 2024

Hello everyone,

I am currently working on a project located in Germany. The ventilation strategy for the apartments will be carried out through continuous exhaust fans located in the bathrooms, allowing air to enter through a window trickle vent.

Based on (CEN) Standard EN 15251–2007, which states that " Ventilation system can also refer to natural ventilation systems making use of temperature differences and wind with facade grills in combination with mechanical exhaust (e.g. in corridors, toilets etc.)" I feel this needs to be consider as "natural ventialtion", since in ASHRAE 62.1 it is also mentioned that "Natural ventilation systems shall be designed in accordance with this section and shall include mechanical ventilation systems designed in accordance with Section 6.2 and/or Section 6.3." (Please condfirm )

If so, to comply with the air quality requirement, I believe the best approach would be to use Alternative Compliance Paths (ACPs). Based on that, I have some questions:

1. Do monitoring requirements apply to this path? (Even if the exhaust fan would be working on-continiously?) 2. Are there exhaust ventilation requirements for bathrooms and kitchens? If so, which standard do they adhere to? 3. Are there filter requirements?

LEED v4.1 O+M, Energy and Atmosphere - Energy Performance - Arc Platform - CHP

LEED v4.1 O+M, Energy and Atmosphere - Energy Performance - Arc Platform - CHP

December 20, 2023

We have a question regarding filling out the data information in ARC platform for a CHP. It produces heat (natural Gas) and electricity. The question is now how to asign the electricity that is produced onsite and also the electricty that is counted as an energy input. As far as we understand it, there is only the option for 'generated onsite - renewable' not for other options.

For electricity we have the meters:

- purchased from grid

- electricity input

- electricity production

Thanks a lot in advance for any help or advise! :)

Air Economizer laboratory

Air Economizer laboratory

September 15, 2023

We have a laboratory with very high indoor air requirements. Due to the high demands on the quality of the room air, no air may be circulated. This means that the proportion of outside air is always 100%. Is it possible to remove the Air Economizer in the Baseline in this case? similar to Proposed. Thank you!
