Waste Heat from Landfill Gas Plant

Waste Heat from Landfill Gas Plant

May 10, 2017

Hello all,

We have an office project which utilizes waste heat from the neighbor landfill gas plant. The plant and office is owned by the same company. The plant produces electricity from landfill gas from nearby landfill (200 meters away) and delivers it to the grid. The office will use the waste heat generated during the electricity production for heating and cooling purposes. All cooling and heating energy will be provided by waste heat. The waste heat from the plant is not going to serve any other buildings and there is more than enough heat for the building.

We believe that this strategy should contribute to the energy efficiency and renewable energy credits since landfill gas is accepted as renewable energy resource and waste heat is utilized. However, we are not sure how to document it. Do you have any experience about it?

I appreciate any advise.

Thank you!

Tenant Area Modeling

Tenant Area Modeling

May 5, 2017

Hello all,

We have a C&S office project where the owner prepares technical infrastructure for VRF heating cooling system in tenant area. All tenants are obligated to use VRF system since the base building infrastructure only allow it. However, VRF units will be bought by tenants according to their needs.

We've added system efficiency requirements in tenant lease and modeled the building with VRF. However, the reviewer didn't accept it since the lease is not signed by tenants. It is not possible to get it signed since the project is still in design phase and only a few of the tenants are determined.

In this case, do we have to model all tenant area same as baseline? If we do so, we cannot pass the prerequisite since the improvement in the CS area is very low.

Can we get the lease signed by some of the tenants we know?

Are there any alternative compliance paths for this situation.

Thank you!

Conditions for site fence

April 27, 2017

Hello everybody
I have a question about the construction fence as a part of the ESC plan: is there a minimum height for closing or covering the fence with tarpaulins to avoid wind erosion?

Many thanks for your help.

Dear All, if a Project consists of many small courtyyards and shade for those courtyyards is provided by the building structure itsself, Can this in any way be used to contribute to the fulfillment of the credit?

Thank you very much for your advice!
Kind regards, Carmen

Connected underground car parks

Connected underground car parks

April 4, 2017

Dear all. We are working on a LEED v4 NC campus project in which two (office) buildings pursuing a LEED certification. In the course of constructing the buildings will provided with two underground car parks which are connected with each other. The car parks are intended exclusively for these new buildings and not for any other building on the campus. Question: Is it possible to calculate one combined baseline parking capacity for the two buildings and compare that number with the total parking capacity of the two connected car parks (instead of the calculation for each individual building)? Many thanks in advance.

Taxi service to function as private shuttles

Taxi service to function as private shuttles

March 29, 2017

Our project is located in an urban environment, we are just a few yards short of fulfilling the requirements. Our project is expected to have as little as 5 FTEs, potentially even less. Do you know, whether a general agreement with a local cab company to transport the users is following the intent of the credit? Providing a dedicated shuttle bus could be considered less sustainable, if a shuttle has to be booked to transport only one or two employees that travel via public transport. Has anyone been in a similar situation, what would be the best course of action?

Clear definition for interior/exterior needed

Clear definition for interior/exterior needed

February 17, 2017

The Definition of interior/exterior in the LOW-EMITTING MATERIALS credit is a bit confusing for me. What is exaclty defined as a waterproofing membrane or air- and water-resistive barrier materials?

In Europe we usually have walls made of bricks or concrete, where an insulation system is applied on top (outdoor). What kind of products should I count as exterior and interior? Is the brick/concrete wall itself the air- and water -resistive barrier, so everything that is applied on top of the wall is a exterior product, and everything that is faced indoors is considered as a indoor product?

We just need to know this because we have to decide for which of our products we have to make emission test.

Thank you.

Emission tests for 2-component epoxy flooring systems

Emission tests for 2-component epoxy flooring systems

February 15, 2017

According to the LEED v.4 credits, it is possible to use different emission tests outside the US to comply with the requirements.

AgBB and DiBt testing method (2010) are mentioned there.
But according to DiBt testing, it is also possible to test flooring systems with multiple layers (different 2-component epoxy products) as a system. So in the end not every single layer is tested seperately, but the whole system is tested at once to comply with the DiBt requirements.

Question: Is it accepted that we use this system emission test to comply with the LEED requirements in this credit? In this case we would use the emission test for the System, and on top of that the VOC-Limits for the individual products in the system.

Thank you

Rainwater Events Calculator v4

Rainwater Events Calculator v4

January 11, 2017

Dear all,

my 2 question refer to the rainfall events calculator.
1) the percentil is calculated on the historical data sheet. The amount is expressed in mm. On the next page "strategies" the "runoff volume required to be managed on site" has to be filled in in cu m. Does it have to be calculated in the following manner? (inteded percentil value - Depression storage- infiltration loss)*365 days * A? I am a bit confused by the use of the 2 different units "mm" and "cu m"...
2) is it correct to multiply the surface area for each Strategie with ist runoff coefficient to obtain the runoff volume managed?

Thank you very much for your answer in advance!

Detaining the rainwater runoff -an accepted solution?

Detaining the rainwater runoff -an accepted solution?

December 8, 2016

Dear all,
In our project we are planning to follow option 1 path 2. Therefor we provide underground-trench systems and a technical ditch on our project site, which gets inserted creatively into the landscape in the course of the final outdoor facilities planning. Is this an accepted solution for achieving this credit even if the approaches and techniques applied just pursue the aim of detaining the rainwater runoff?
Does an evaporation or an infiltration has to take place?
What do you think?
Thanks!
