How to tell if the chemical inventory of a product is disclosed to 0.1% (1000ppm)

June 19, 2018

Hello there,

Option 1 accepts the following as documentation:

  • Document to demonstrate the chemical inventory of the product to at least 0.1% (1000ppm).
  • The manufacturer has published complete content inventory for the product following these guidelines:
    • A publicly available inventory of all ingredients identified by name and Chemical Abstract Service Registration Number (CASRN).
    • Materials defined as trade secret or intellectual property may withhold the name and/or CASRN but must disclose role, amount and GreenScreen benchmark, as defined in GreenScreen v1.2.

A manufacturer sent me a list of ingredients with different percentages varying from 0.15% to 73.05%. How do I tell if the ingredients of a product is disclosed to 0.1%?

Thank you!

Achieving credit in a Rest Area

Achieving credit in a Rest Area

June 19, 2018

The provincial government is designing a Rest Area for an important Highway, the project will also is to be operated and owned by the provincial government. There is no local code requirement for parking capacity. This rest area is accessible only to the highway users (cars, recreational vehicles, trucks, etc.), and there is no fee to use this highway, nor the rest area. One parking lot will be reserve for the full time equivalent employee. The remaining parking spaces will be dedicated for the highway users. We would like to achieve this credit, but we are unsure which base ratio to use.

Question 1: Is parking for highway users in the rest area considered ‘’On-street parking in public-right-of-way’’?

Question 2: If not, which base ratio should we use for this project in the Institute of Transportation Engineers’ Transportation Planning Handbook, 3rd edition, Tables 18-2 through 18-4?

SSp2 Ruling based on Risk Assessment

SSp2 Ruling based on Risk Assessment

June 6, 2018

Hi All, I'm working on a Healthcare v4 project that has detected iron in significant concentrations on the project site and it appears to possibly be a background contaminate but this is still being investigated. As the risk of elevated iron underneath a parking lot and building is potentially not directly harmful to building and site occupants, the client is considering performing a risk assessment to state a case that the site would not cause site occupant's health and this would be submitted to the local government to review. If the local government deems the risk to be sufficiently low and grants permission for the facility to go ahead with construction without going through a full remediation process, would this be acceptable for the fulfillment of this prerequisite?

I'm wondering if anyone has come across an interpretation from the GBCI for something like this, as I haven't found anything in the addenda. I interpret this path as following the full local procedure, however the prerequisite requires remediation if contamination is suspected.

The closest mention I've found is the following CaGBC statement in regards to brownfield remediation for NC 2009 LEED Canada projects, however the USGBC often interprets differently and this is a different rating system: The use of a Risk Management plan approved by the relevant regulatory authority is acceptable as part of the remediation for achieving this credit. The relevant regulatory authority is considered to be the expert and final authority on remediation measures that are considered acceptable.

Maybe I'm missing something obvious but any feedback would be appreciated!

Thanks

Exterior Noise Monitoring - Rural Roads

Exterior Noise Monitoring - Rural Roads

May 30, 2018

In building a rural school, our address is technically a highway (HWY 25 to be exact). However, this is a rural road and has very little traffic and therefore is not a significant noise source. I understand the external noise monitoring requirement for urban highways that see lots of traffic, but in this situation, other than at school pickup and drop off times, there may only be 5 cars all day. Are we still required to conduct the exterior noise monitoring?

Excluding adjacent park from LEED Boundary

Excluding adjacent park from LEED Boundary

May 30, 2018

Hello

I dealing with a project where an adjacent park mostly made of turf grass is being installed beside the building going for certification. Both the building and the park are owned by the same entity, but are being produced through different budgets. If we include the park within the LEED boundary, there is no way we can meet the Outdoor Water Use prerequisite, plus, the parks team in not willing to reduce the turf area. If we exclude the park from LPSA, we will then meet the prerequisite.

Are we required to include the park? Guidance on this would be much appreciated.

Thank you for your time

Anti-Ligature fixtures

Anti-Ligature fixtures

May 25, 2018

The reference guide is clear that special or unique water closets can be excluded from the credit calculations, my query is does this expand to special or unique fixtures? Our client requires anti-ligature fixtures in each resident room which are then classified as a private faucet but we are unable to find a watersense labelled antiligature faucet to use. Can I exclude all anti-ligature fixtures from the indoor water use credit?

Scope only includes lighting

May 16, 2018

Hi,

We have a CI renovation for a portion of a larger base building. The base building controls the HVAC completely (we will be doing no work to it) and we will not be touching the building envelope.  Unfortunately both the envelope and HVAC system are old and below 90.1-2010 standards.

1. Can we achieve the pre-req (and get credit points) through Option 1 - Simulation by installing high performance lighting:

 a) Can the existing envelope be used in the baseline model, ie. the same in the baseline and proposed models. I saw this addenda (https://www.usgbc.org/leedaddenda/10454) but it also seems like most posts so far in this forum say that you must model the baseline according to ASHRAE without any existing elements.

b) Can the existing HVAC system be used in the baseline model if HVAC is outside our scope of work ?

2. Do we need to meet envelope and HVAC 90.1 mandatory provisions to achieve the pre-req and credit?

ie. If our base building does not have a continuous air barrier or a vestibule say, does that exclude us from LEED as we can't meet the pre-req?

Thanks for all your help!

Dual Flush Flow Rate

Dual Flush Flow Rate

May 10, 2018

We have a product data sheet for a dual flush toilet that states 6L/3L with an effective flush volume of 4L. The Indoor Water Use calculator has an internal calculation for dual flush toilets that puts out 4.5L/flush. Can I use the 4L/flush rate based on the specific product data sheet and provide that data sheet as backup or must I use the calculator default? This is a 2 point swing so I would much prefer to use the 4L/flush.

Base ratios for hospitals

Base ratios for hospitals

May 7, 2018

I'm working on a hospital project which qualifies as Case 2 (although it's not urban and qualifies by way of diverse uses only) for this credit and am trying to work out the base ratio of parking spaces. Table 1 in the reference guide shows the ratio as 1.1 parking space per employee for hospitals. However, the PCC document on the USGBC site seems to include some numbers for beds as well. I'm not sure if spaces per bed have been excluded on purpose or not, or whether or not the 1.1 per staff rolls this up somehow, although it would seem to me to be reasonable to allot spaces for visitors, particularly if the project is not qualifying for the transit credit.

What I'd like to know is whether anyone else has questioned or challenged this (I haven't found anything pertaining to this in the addenda) or if anyone has insight into these numbers, I'd appreciate any feedback.

Landscaped area on a podium

Landscaped area on a podium

April 30, 2018

My project consists of some landscaping at grade (2%) and the majority of landscaping on the podium level (18%) for a combined landscaped area that is about 20% of the site.

The exert below describes a case for counting courtyard garden space, in the event that there is no vegetation on the ground. In my case, there is some vegetation on the ground, but I need to count both areas to achieve this credit. Could I assume that I can combine these two areas in order to achieve this credit?

'For buildings without vegetation on the grounds, teams can earn points by reducing the use of potable water for watering any roof and courtyard garden space or outdoor planters, provided the planters and garden space cover at least 5% of the building site area (including building footprint, hardscape area, parking footprint, etc.)'
