Hydrogen Production

February 29, 2016

Hi,
We are looking to install an on-site hydrogen production station that will produce hydrogen that is then sent to hydrogen charging stations around the project to refuel and run a fleet of hdrogen powered forklifts.

1) Does anyone know how we can incorporate this into an energy model.
2) Can we use this as an ID credit?
3) Can we account for the bi-product of the hydrogen production (left over water) in our LEED submission as captured water if we use it for irrigation and/or toilet flushing?

regards,

Successful CIR: Audio Tours as Green Education (Canada)

February 9, 2016

We've received a successful CIR ruling on our Green Education Audio Tour package, which is a slide show with audio (recorded on site), and an online case study. The audio tour is distributed via phone, SMS, web, podcast and a green building app.

CIR is too long to post here; feel free to contact me to have it forwarded. jackie AT greenbuildingaudiotours DOT com

Minimum Benefit to Achieve ID Credits

Minimum Benefit to Achieve ID Credits

February 8, 2016

Hello,

It seems to me I read at some point in time that the CaGBC wanted to see a minimum measurable benefit for Innovative Strategies. (Note: I'm not asking about Exemplary Performance where you are achieving the next incremental threshold.) I'm thinking, for example if you were incorporating an innovative waste heat recovery system then they may require (or at least suggest) that it achieve at least the equivalent of one EAc1 point in energy savings.

This is a LEED 2009 project. The Reference Guide simply says that strategies are to have "significant, measurable environmental benefits...".

Inconsistency between BD+C and O+M

Inconsistency between BD+C and O+M

January 21, 2016

Despite efforts to better align the rating systems in LEED v4, there are some inconsistencies between the Enhanced Indoor Air Quality Strategies credits in BD+C and O+M. These include different alarm setpoints (10% in BD+C versus 15% in O+M) and different wording about setpoints (alarm when "sensed CO2 concentration exceeds the setpoint" vs. alarm when "differential CO2 concentration in any zone rises ... above that corresponding to the minimum outdoor air rate required"). The O+M description is much more opaque. I think there is an opportunity here for the USGBC to improve in future versions of O+M.

Credit requirement language

Credit requirement language

January 13, 2016

Has anyone else experienced that the pilot credit requirement language is vague in spots? Namely, the fact that 2 education sessions are required, and a follow-up survey, is not covered or elaborated on except that they are listed as required submittals.

Green Cleaning as NC ID credit

Green Cleaning as NC ID credit

January 11, 2016

Hi, I am pursuing Green Cleaning as an ID credit for a NC v3 building. Does anyone know when does the performance period begin? Or because this is NC there is no need to consider a performance period and the project should comply with the policy and program requirements from the outset? Also, are the thresholds the same as for the EBOM credits (30% for cleaning products and 20% for cleaning equipment)? Many thanks,

retail definition?

retail definition?

January 6, 2016

I am curious what uses "retail" would include. Have searched for a definition but can't find one. I think it covers what I think of as primarily ground-floor commercial and is distinct from office. But I am not sure where LEED draws the line as you move into food services and personal and professional services. I have put a list below of the types of uses we are encountering near our project site where I am not sure - ordered roughly from definitely retail to maybe not retail. It impacts whether we have to determine peak visitor demand ourselves or use the required "retail" buildings floor area rate.

Retail includes?
grocery store / supermarket
any store selling goods (shoes, art, computers, clothing, etc.)
pharmacy
bakery (e.g. small scale artisanal producing and selling on site)
cafe/coffee shop
restaurant
bank
insurance seller / travel agency
hairdresser/barber/tatoo parlour
internet cafe
walk-in medical clinic / testing lab

Water-Related Systems Implementation Phase

Water-Related Systems Implementation Phase

December 23, 2015

I love the introduction of this credit. I have a question regarding the implementation phase of the water-related systems. The credit requires an explanation how one on-site non-potable water supply source was analyzed to reduce municipal supply or wastewater treatment for two of the following:
-indoor water demand
-outdoor water demand
-process water demand
-supply sources
I work for a municipal government and our capital funds typically limit our ability to implement a stormwater, grey water or process water reuse system within the building. Would we satisfy the implementation phase requirement by demonstrating the following?
1. We have reduced the outdoor water demand by either directing stormwater to landscaped areas or directed it to a raingarden or cistern to be used for irrigation
2. We have reduced the burden on the municipal stormwater system (which is different than the wastewater treatment system) by utilizing the stormwater onsite as per above
This is essentially double counting the same design feature so I want to confirm this is allowed. I also want to confirm that the stormwater system would be classified as a wastewater treatmeant system under the credit. The municipal stormwater system directs water to the river whereas the wastewater system directs water to one of our wastewater treatment plants.
Thanks

Peak discharge/flow rate

Peak discharge/flow rate

Which formula do you use to calculate peak flow rate (1 and 2-year, 24hours). I am using NRCS (SCS) TR-55 Graphical Discharge Method. Is that recommanded?

Limited access for inpatient units

Limited access for inpatient units

December 2, 2015

We're looking at this credit as a potential Innovation in Design for a Long-Term Care BD+C project. For our project, there are 2 large courtyards as well as several balconies that can be accessed, provided that residents are accompanied by family or staff. I'm wondering if the requirement for accompanied access would prevent credit achievement. The residents can access the space as needed provided they have someone go with them...

Has anyone else attempted this in a long-term care setting, or a similar project where residents/in-patients are closely monitored?
