Industry Wide EPD with slightly different product listed

November 23, 2016

I have located an industry wide type III EPD for gypsum by the Gypsum Association. In the product description it lists the products as "for average 5/8" type X gypsum boards". I am using a 1/2" gypsum and am not certain if I can apply this industry EPD as it states 5/8". What are your thoughts on being able to count this EPD?

Primer for Waterproofing membrane

Primer for Waterproofing membrane

November 7, 2016

In the requirements for this credit, the building exterior is defined as "everything outside and inclusive of the primary and secondary
weatherproofing system, such as waterproofing membranes and air- and water-resistive barrier materials".

My question is this: Is the primer for the waterproofing membrane included in this definition and therefore I can use a product that does not meet the VOC emissions guidelines?

Case example: Blueskin on Concrete faced wall. The blueskin is considered the waterproofing membrane but it requires a primer to be applied to the concrete before application. Would this primer be considered 'inclusive' of the waterproofing membrane?

Thanks!

exemplary performance

November 1, 2016

I purchased my v4 reference guide last year and the listing of exemplary performance options differs in the table 5: Scorecard and policy areas and the information listed under each credit. According to the information provided under each credit the following credits included exemplary performance:
Access to Quality Transit
Certified Green Buildings
Optimize Energy Performance
Indoor Water Use
Outdoor Water Use
Building Re-Use
Rainwater Management
Heat Island Reduction
Solar Orientation
Renewable Energy
District Heating and Cooling
Infrastructure Energy Efficiency
Wastewater Management
Recycled and Re-used Infrastructure.

Is this the full list of credits with exemplary performance or are there others. Table 5 in my guide suggests that Preferred Locations, Site Design for Habitat, Wetlands and Waterbody Conservation, Walkable Streets, Mixed-Use Neighbourhoods, Housing Types and Affordable Housing, Visitability and Universal Design, Tree-Lined and Shaded Streetscapes and Local Food Production also have Exemplary Performance options. But my guides says under each of these credits - "Not Available"

Option 2 Meaning of "Contiguous Area"

Option 2 Meaning of "Contiguous Area"

October 28, 2016

Some of the air handling units at the site (police station) where I will be conducting air testing serve more than one area on a given floor, and these areas are not directly connected to each other (i.e. an area served by another AHU lies in between). Would I need to sample in each of these areas served by the same AHU?

Previously Developed Buildings exemption

Previously Developed Buildings exemption

October 28, 2016

What is meant by 'previously developed buildings'? We have a project where there are existing residential buildings on a site that will be demolished for new residential buildings. Would this constitue 'previous developed buildings'? Or is the criteria only exempting those 'previously developed' existing buildings which remain within the project boundary?

Determining STC ratings for ceiling products

Determining STC ratings for ceiling products

October 20, 2016

The LEED v4 acoustics credit addresses sound isolation purely through composite STC ratings. In my research, I have struggled to find STC ratings for ceiling products. Ceiling product manufacturers typically publish acoustic performance information in the form of CAC ratings. Is there a method to convert CAC ratings to STC ratings? What are other projects doing to address the sound isolation requirements associated with vertical adjacencies?

Sounds transmission - Ceilings and Floors

October 20, 2016

The LEED v4 acoustics calculator expands on the guidance provided in the credit and reference guide with respect to the sound transmission requirements and associated calculations. It notes that each surface in a room (each plane surrounding the space) should have a separate assembly including the floor and ceiling. What do we do if we're a one story slab-on-grade construction? Do we just ignore those planes?

U.S. Owner building in Calgary wants LEED U.S. vs. LEED Canada

U.S. Owner building in Calgary wants LEED U.S. vs. LEED Canada

October 16, 2016

Citing delays in reviews and response to questions as well as unfamiliarity with the Canadian version of LEED, a U.S. based Owner wishes to pursue LEED Silver for a project in Canada with U.S. LEED rather than LEED Canada.
Does anyone know if this is possible? desirable?

CHP - Approach

CHP - Approach

October 14, 2016

Hi, I have a project with a CHP and I am unsure how to model in line with requirements.

It is to be constructed as part of the current project and will be in the LEED boundary. However ultimately it will be sold to the utility (who is technically owned by the county who owns the building but different entities so not really) who will sell the electricity back to the project building for a reduced rate and give the waste heat to the project for free (which is used for heating and in absorption chillers).

My Question is, should I model as per the proposed operation? Free waste heat, reduced cost electricity even if it will eventually not be owned by the project building. With the baseline being as per 90.1

OR

Should I model as if the CHP is on site and owned by building so traditional CHP/absorption chiller set up - Pay for gas input, get heat and electricity as generated by the CHP.

Thanks
Victoria

Manufactured products and packaging waste

Manufactured products and packaging waste

October 13, 2016

When creating a LEED document for a product line we need to include things like pre & post-consumer recycled content. We also like to include the manufacturing and extraction sites.
My question will be focusing on the packaging waste of a rolled product such as a peel and stick vapour barrier where you will have a paper or poly release liner.
At what point do you include or not the same information as stated above into your document for the packaging material? Do I really need to disclose the VOC content of the packaging and would it still be considered packaging?
